The Felt Sense of Commitment: Tuning Into Your Body’s Wisdom
We tend to treat commitment as a decision made in the head: a weighing of pros and cons, a calculation of costs and benefits, a verdict reached through deliberation. But anyone who has ever said “yes” to something while feeling a hollow drop in their stomach, or said “no” while their chest tightened with something that felt suspiciously like regret, knows that the body often has its own counsel on these matters—one that doesn’t always wait for the mind to finish its spreadsheet. This article explores what philosopher and psychotherapist Eugene Gendlin called the “felt sense,” and how this concept offers a different, often more reliable, way of understanding the commitments we make—to relationships, careers, decisions, and ourselves.
What Is a Felt Sense?
The term “felt sense” originates with Gendlin, a philosopher who worked alongside psychologist Carl Rogers at the University of Chicago in the 1960s and 70s. Gendlin was trying to solve a practical puzzle: why did some people in therapy improve quickly while others, despite years of talking, didn’t change much at all? His research, summarized in his influential book Focusing (1978), led him to a striking observation. The clients who improved weren’t necessarily more articulate or insightful. What distinguished them was a particular way of attending to their own bodies—a pause before speaking, in which they seemed to be checking something internal, something not yet in words, before continuing.
Gendlin called this internal, pre-verbal awareness a “felt sense.” It is not an emotion in the usual sense—not simply anger, sadness, or joy—and it is not a thought. It is something more like a bodily registration of a whole situation, often experienced as a sensation in the torso: a tightness, a heaviness, a spaciousness, a queasy unease, or a settled rightness. Gendlin distinguished the felt sense from ordinary physical sensations like hunger or muscle tension; it is specifically the body’s holistic, implicit sense of a situation, person, or problem, often before that situation can be fully named.
The felt sense is, crucially, not vague in the way “gut feeling” might suggest if we take that phrase to mean something fuzzy and unreliable. Gendlin argued that it carries precise, intricate information that simply hasn’t yet been translated into language. The work of “focusing”—his term for the practice of attending to felt sense—is to slow down enough to let that information surface, and to find words, images, or gestures that match it closely enough to produce a recognisable shift, what Gendlin called a “felt shift,” often accompanied by a physical sense of release, like an exhale.
Why Commitment Lives in the Body
Commitment is an unusually rich testing ground for this idea, because commitment is rarely just one thing. When you commit to a partner, a job, a project, or a long-term goal, you are not making a single decision; you are entering into an ongoing relationship with uncertainty, sacrifice, identity, and time. Cognitive deliberation can weigh the explicit factors—salary, compatibility, convenience, logic—but the body seems to register something more comprehensive: how this commitment will feel to live inside of, day after day, including dimensions that haven’t yet been consciously articulated.
This isn’t merely a poetic claim. Research in affective neuroscience and embodied cognition has increasingly supported the idea that bodily states play a constitutive role in decision-making, not just an epiphenomenal one. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio’s “somatic marker hypothesis” proposed that emotional processes, expressed through bodily states, guide (or bias) decision-making, particularly when situations are complex and uncertain. Damasio’s research suggested that without emotional input to guide decision-making in complex, uncertain conditions, people may default to overly rational strategies, weighing the costs and benefits of every choice, which can be inefficient and sometimes worse than emotion-guided choice.
This matters enormously for commitment, because commitment decisions are almost always complex and uncertain in exactly the way Damasio described. There is rarely a clean, fully rational answer to “should I marry this person” or “should I take this job” or “should I have a child,” because the relevant future is unknowable and the stakes are existential rather than merely transactional. In these conditions, the body’s somatic markers—felt as attraction or aversion, ease or constriction—become not a distraction from good decision-making but a necessary component of it.
The Body’s Vocabulary: Constriction, Expansion, and Ambivalence
People who practice body-based awareness often develop a working vocabulary for what commitment-related felt senses tend to communicate, even though the specific sensations are unique to each person and each situation. A few patterns recur often enough to be worth naming, while keeping in mind that translation is always personal.
Constriction is one of the most commonly reported sensations associated with reluctant or coerced commitment. This can show up as tightness in the chest or throat, a held breath, a bracing in the shoulders, or a sense of the body becoming smaller or more rigid. Constriction often communicates something like self-protection: an implicit sense that saying yes will require defending against something, suppressing some other need, or losing some degree of autonomy. It is worth noting that constriction is not always a signal to refuse a commitment outright—sometimes it points toward an unaddressed condition that, if named and met, could transform the constriction into something more spacious. The skill, in focusing-oriented work, is not to obey the sensation blindly but to stay with it and ask what it is protecting or pointing toward.
Expansion, by contrast, often accompanies commitments that feel aligned, even when they are objectively difficult or risky. This might be felt as warmth in the chest, an easier breath, a sense of the body settling or “coming home,” or simply more room to move. Importantly, expansion is not the same as excitement or adrenaline; a felt sense of rightness can be calm rather than thrilling. People sometimes mistake the absence of anxiety for the absence of feeling, when in fact a settled body is itself a strong signal.
Ambivalence tends to feel different from either of these: often a kind of static, a simultaneous pull in two directions, or a sense of fog or numbness where a clearer signal might be expected. Gendlin was particularly interested in this murky territory, because he believed the felt sense of an unclear situation is itself meaningful and workable. Rather than treating ambivalence as an absence of information, focusing treats it as a compressed, not-yet-unpacked form of information—an invitation to sit with the murk rather than prematurely resolve it through pure analysis.
Interoception: The Physiological Basis
The felt sense rests on a more basic capacity called interoception: the perception of internal bodily states, including heartbeat, breath, gut sensation, and muscular tension. Interoception is processed largely through a network involving the insular cortex, which integrates signals from the body to construct what neuroscientist Bud Craig described as a moment-by-moment sense of the body’s physiological condition, sometimes called the “material me.”
Interoceptive accuracy varies considerably between individuals, and research has linked it to a range of outcomes relevant to commitment and decision-making. Studies on interoception and decision-making, including work building on the Iowa Gambling Task paradigm originally developed by Damasio’s group, have found that people with greater interoceptive sensitivity tend to make more advantageous decisions under uncertainty, particularly in tasks where explicit, rule-based reasoning is insufficient. The implication for commitment is suggestive: people who are more attuned to their internal bodily signals may have better access to the implicit, integrative information that the felt sense carries about complex life decisions.
This doesn’t mean interoceptive awareness is infallible, and it’s worth being cautious here. Interoceptive signals can be shaped by anxiety, trauma history, illness, and arousal states unrelated to the decision at hand. A racing heart might indicate excitement about a relationship, or it might indicate caffeine, or generalised anxiety, or a panic response rooted in past experience that has nothing directly to do with the present commitment. Part of developing a reliable felt sense, in Gendlin’s framework, involves learning to discriminate between noise and signal—a skill built through practice, not assumed as a given.
Trauma, Attachment, and the Reliability of Bodily Signals
This caveat deserves more attention, because the idea of “trusting your gut” can be misapplied in ways that are unhelpful or even harmful, particularly for people with histories of trauma. Trauma can disrupt the normal relationship between bodily sensation and accurate information. Psychiatrist and trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk, in his widely read work on the somatic effects of trauma, has argued that traumatic experience can become “stored” in bodily states in ways that produce chronic activation, numbing, or dissociation, independent of present-moment circumstances. For someone with this kind of history, a felt sense of alarm in a safe relationship, or numbness in a genuinely risky one, may reflect the nervous system’s old patterning rather than accurate information about the present situation.
This complicates, but does not invalidate, the practice of tuning into felt sense around commitment. It suggests instead that body-based awareness needs to be paired with discernment, ideally developed gradually and, where trauma history is significant, with the support of a trained therapist. Polyvagal theory, developed by Stephen Porges, offers one useful framework here, describing how the autonomic nervous system shifts between states of safety, fight-or-flight activation, and shutdown, often outside of conscious control. Recognizing which state one is in can help distinguish “this commitment is genuinely unsafe” from “my nervous system is in a protective state shaped by past events that isn’t necessarily about this present choice.” Neither interpretation should be assumed by default; both require attention and, often, time.
This is also why attachment style matters for how felt sense gets read. Someone with an anxious attachment pattern may interpret ordinary relational distance as a bodily alarm signal warning against commitment, when the more accurate read might be that distance is simply distance. Someone with an avoidant pattern might interpret the bodily intensity of intimacy as a signal to flee, when the intensity may simply reflect the unfamiliarity of closeness rather than a meaningful warning. The felt sense is real and worth attending to, but it is not a magic oracle exempt from the psychological patterns a person carries.
The Practice of Focusing
Gendlin developed a structured practice for working with felt sense, which he called Focusing, intended to be teachable and repeatable rather than a mysterious, occasional occurrence. While full instruction is beyond the scope of this article, a simplified version, adapted for the question of commitment, might look like this.
First, find a quiet body posture and bring to mind the commitment in question—not analysing it, just letting it be present. Second, notice where in the body something registers in response: chest, stomach, throat, shoulders, jaw. Third, rather than immediately naming the sensation with a familiar label like “anxiety” or “excitement,” stay with the raw sensation itself for a moment, almost as if meeting a stranger, curious about its specific qualities: Is it tight or loose? Warm or cool? Still or moving? Fourth, gently ask the sensation what it’s about, or what it needs, and wait for a word, phrase, or image that seems to resonate with it—not invented, but arising. Fifth, check that word or image against the sensation: does it produce a small release, a sense of “yes, that’s it,” or does it feel slightly off, prompting another attempt?
This process can take minutes or much longer, and it often does not produce a tidy verdict like “commit” or “don’t commit.” What it more often produces is increased clarity about what the commitment would actually require, what fears or hopes are bundled into it, and what conditions, if any, would need to be met for the body to settle.
Commitment as an Ongoing, Not Singular, Bodily Event
One of the more practically useful implications of felt-sense thinking is that commitment is not a single decision-point but an ongoing bodily relationship that can be periodically re-checked. The initial felt sense at the moment of commitment—proposing marriage, signing a contract, agreeing to a long-term project—is only the beginning. Bodies continue to register information as circumstances unfold, and a useful practice is to periodically return to felt sense as a way of checking in, not to second-guess every commitment perpetually, but to notice when something has genuinely shifted versus when an old, familiar friction is simply part of the texture of sustained commitment.
This distinction matters because all long-term commitments involve some degree of difficulty, boredom, or doubt as a normal feature, not a sign of error. The felt sense of “this is hard right now” is different from the felt sense of “this is fundamentally wrong,” even though both can produce similar surface sensations of discomfort. Learning to tell these apart—not through rigid rules but through repeated, careful attention—is part of what makes felt-sense awareness a skill rather than a single insight.
A Complement to, Not a Replacement for, Reason
It is worth being clear that felt sense is best understood as a complement to deliberative reasoning rather than a substitute for it. Gendlin himself was a philosopher deeply engaged with rigorous thought, and his model does not ask people to abandon analysis in favour of pure sensation. Rather, it suggests that good decisions, particularly about complex, value-laden matters like commitment, integrate both: the explicit, articulable considerations that reasoning can access, and the implicit, holistic considerations that only the body seems to track comprehensively in real time.
There is a useful parallel in research on decision-making under complexity more broadly. Some studies on intuition and expertise, including work by psychologist Gary Klein on how experienced professionals make rapid decisions in high-stakes environments, suggest that intuitive, body-anchored judgment can outperform explicit analysis specifically in domains of deep experience and complexity, while explicit analysis tends to outperform intuition in simpler, more rule-governed domains. Commitment decisions, given their complexity and the impossibility of fully modelling a future relationship or path, may fall into the category where bodily, intuitive processing has genuine epistemic value rather than being a mere feeling to be overridden by “rational” thought.
Conclusion
The felt sense of commitment offers an alternative to the common cultural script that good decisions are made purely in the head, with the body relegated to noise or distraction. Gendlin’s framework, supported by decades of subsequent research into interoception, somatic markers, and embodied decision-making, suggests instead that the body holds integrative information that deliberation alone cannot access, particularly in the face of complex, uncertain, identity-laden choices like the commitments that shape a life. This is not a license to follow every bodily impulse uncritically, especially for those whose nervous systems carry the imprint of past trauma or anxious patterning, where bodily signals require careful, sometimes professionally supported, discernment. But for many people, learning to slow down, attend to the body’s specific and often wordless registration of a situation, and let language catch up to what is already known beneath it, offers a richer, more honest relationship with the commitments they choose to make.
